Contact Body

Based on the renowned Momentum Contact Workshop taught over 40 times in Bali, Thailand, and Canada to hundreds of new dancers, Contact Body is the distilled version, bringing you the core skills we teach as the dance of Contact Improvisation!

We created this course in 2021, when the world couldn't touch during the pandemic, and it's sold worldwide to dancers and dance educators internationally, including Australia, USA, Asia and Europe. Now it's online — accessible anywhere, anytime.

What is Contact Improvisation

Contact Improvisation is a playful, physical dialogue between two moving bodies. First initiated by American dancer Steve Paxton in 1972, it has become a worldwide practice.

It teaches trust, grounding, and creative awareness through touch, gravity, momentum, and shared connection. You don't need experience — just curiosity and a willingness to move.

FAQ's

I have no dance experience. Is this right for me?

Yes! This course has been designed for and taken by, ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS. Students arrive with a wide variety of movement backgrounds, some without any formal dance training at all. They may have their own complementary practices they can draw upon, such as martial arts, somatic therapy, meditation or yoga.

How much time should I set aside?

With all lessons we recommend watching it once through to see the demonstration for visuals, and then re-watching at least once again, to practice on your own while listening to the audio guidance.

SOLO BODY is approximately 1.5 hours of teaching. Allow minimum 2.5 hours with practice.

TWO BODIES is 2 hours of teaching. Allow minimum 4 hours with practice.

Our courses include teachings, instructions, meditations, warm ups, and dance exercises. Since each lesson is short, you can get through a few lessons in a sitting, or in a single day if you have the time dedicated.

What do I need to begin learning this online?

Space wise, look for an area least 10 x 10 feet. Ideally wood floors are best for sliding. Some contact dancers dance in grassy parks, their backyard, kitchen or kid's padded puzzle mats, as this makes for a nice landing pad as well. Please avoid dancing on concrete for safety.

Clothing wise, we recommend longer sleeve shirts or tshirts in cotton, and sweatpants or leggings. Loose light layers are perfect!

For TWO BODIES we would HIGHLY recommend wearing DANCE KNEE PADS. These are to protect your knees. You can purchase them on Amazon, Ebay, your local dance shop, or even pole dance studios.

Other than that, bring your energy, an open mind, a good WIFI connection and water.

What is your refund / liability policy?

We do not offer refunds. This would be like someone leaving in the middle of a dance workshop, for which there are no refunds in real-life workshops.

We hold no liability for any injuries that may result from practicing CONTACT BODY or Contact Improvisation. What we teach greatly emphasizes safety and slowing down to learn. By signing up to participate, you are releasing Contact Body, Faces of CI, and the facilitators from all future reparations. Like any sport, please take care of your body and use your own judgment to dance safely. In our experience, injuries are rare and come from not paying attention to the space or our dance partner.

How long will I have access to the course?

The course is available always once purchased. However, we want you to use the momentum of learning to finish it.

Don't let this be like a gym membership you sign up for and never use!
