The Origin

How It Began

"

The year was 2011 or 2012, I forget exactly when. I had a severe case of writers block; could not sit down at a workstation and get anything done. At the time I was on a retro-tech kick, going around antique and junk stores looking for old-school analog tools. I saw an old Smith Corona manual typewriter for $35. A quick check showed it was in working condition, and had a decent ribbon. I bought it, brought it home, and started writing again.

The words just seemed to flow easier when using the typewriter versus a word processor program. After my typewriter purchase, I discovered Richard Holt's book, Typewriter Revolution, and the Typosphere. I had started expanding out from the usual technological survival stuff I had written for Cybertek et al.

About the Work

Entering the Interzone

Finding Interzone: The Early Years by Tom Redacted traces the formative period of a half-mythical place known as Interzone—part city, part state of mind, part administrative error.

The book blends memoir, cultural history, and surreal reportage to explore how Interzone first emerged: not as a destination, but as a condition. Through fragmented anecdotes, shadowy mentors, and early experiments with altered perception, Redacted chronicles the years when Interzone was still unstable—leaking into dreams, alleyways, and unfinished manuscripts.

Themes Explored

What Lies Within

Creativity & Madness

The porous boundary between creativity and madness—where one ends and the other begins, if they ever do.

Experimentation as Cartography

Youthful experimentation as mapmaking—charting territories that exist only in the act of exploration.

Invisible Cities

Cities that exist only when you're not looking directly at them—peripheral places of impossible geography.

The tone is reflective but restless, documenting how the "early years" shaped Interzone into a permanent psychic landmark—one that can never quite be found again, only re-entered.

A classic origin story, in other words. Every mythology needs a rough draft.
